W.I.P.

My aim is to work on as many different subjects as I can; the more variety the better. Characters, creatures, environments, props, everything!

Here's the list I'm loosely following:

Organic Creatures
  • A simple cartoon creature
  • Stylized human character with basic clothing

Organic Creature Finale
  • Creature + clothing + prop

Environmental Art - Organic
  • One or two set pieces.
  • Mini-scene incorporating wood and stone. Plants too, perhaps.

Environmental Art - Hard surface modeling
  • One or two props
  • Large mechanical set piece

Environmental Art Finale
  • Scene combining natural elements and machinery

Hard Surface Modeling
  • A modern/sci-fi weapon, likely a firearm of some sort.
  • A vehicle. A KA-52, maybe an A-10? Or maybe an AT-AT?
  • Fully mechanical character or creature. Should have some sort of cloth-based element. Preferable non-bipedal.

Hard Surface/Organic Finale
  • A character or creature that's a hybrid of organic parts and machinery. If the previous project was a biped, this guy needs at least three legs. Or a pogo stick.

After that, it's on to:

New Game+
  • A rough redo of the above list's sections, starting once again with organic characters and creatures. Fewer bipeds!
  • Increased complexity for everything - I'll build a set to go with the model if it's too simple.
  • Out of all the projects, at least half need to be game-ready. Topology appropriate for animation, poly count at acceptable levels, normal maps, and so on.
  • When I have enough high quality pieces, create a portfolio! I'm thinking all black and minimalistic and professional and stuff. Less babbling, too.

Easily, my biggest flaw is speed. I am slow. Very slow. I fuss over insignificant details and spend an immense amount of time on things that aren't visible in the end. That's why I started adding mini-projects and research spikes to the list. But it hasn't been enough to drag me out of the mire of obsession and procrastination that I'm typically bogged down in.

As such, I'm going to be attempting quick sculpts on the side until I've kicked my ass into gear. I got the idea from a thread in a forum (I can't remember if it was on CG Society or the Pixologic forums) where artists from a studio posted their sculpts done during their lunch break. Awesome, fast stuff.
